Our Super Southmead Fundraising Stars!

Emimly McGuiness

Fundraiser profile: Emily McGuinness

Emily and her family have so far raised more than £7,000 for Southmead Hospital Charity’s NICU fund.

Why did you start fundraising?

Emily wanted to do something to give back to the hospital’s NICU team for the care her daughter received in the first months of her life.

She said: “Isla was in NICU for 10 weeks. We knew during pregnancy that things weren’t 100% right but never ever expected her to be so sick.

“They saved her life on the unit so this was my way of saying thank you and giving something back.”

How did you get started?

Emily’s first event was a fun day held in September 2014 at The Eastfield Inn.

“I set up a Just Giving page and organised a fundraising family fun day last September, the event was opened by the Lord Mayor, we had Anna from Disney’s Frozen, magic shows, a barn owl, flying rockets and so many stalls,” she said.

“We also had a £750 handbag that Mulberry donated which we raffled off.

“It was a truly fantastic day. I remember being worried that people may not turn up but they were literally queuing to get in!”

Emily’s top tip for fundraisers:

“As for advice, I would say plan, plan, plan! Start well before you think you need to.

“I think I planned for September for 5 months so give yourself plenty of time.

“Also don’t be afraid to ask people for help/donations/prizes etc. They can only say no!

“If looking for raffle prizes where possible pop into shops to do it as the personal touch is nice.”

In August 2015 Emily, along with a team of friends and colleagues, are taking on the Tough Mudder South West.  You can read more about Isla's journey and sponsor the Tough Mudder team here
