In memory of Oliver
Stacy and Ben O'Brien with the support of their friends and family raised £6,000 through fundraising events and online donations in memory of their son Oliver who was stillborn.
Ben also completed a gruelling Ironman Wales Triathlon in September 2019.
They returned to the maternity department to meet staff and find out more about how their donation can make a positive impact. The couple also added a balloon to the maternity mural engraved with Oliver’s name.
Here the couple talk about why they wanted to support the Maple Suite at Southmead Hospital in memory of their son.
“The Maple Suite at Southmead Hospital is a dedicated space for women and their partner whose babies are lost either before, during or shortly after birth. It is a safe space for women to deliver their babies and spend time with them.
The suite allows both parents to stay for as long as they need, with en-suite facilities and simple fixtures that mean there is no need to leave the room, once there; reducing the risk of being confronted with other deliveries and new babies.
Donations to this charity can make improvements to this facility that provide more comfort and sensitivity to parents going through this difficult time.
Sanctuary and comfort
We never imagined that we would need to access such facilities but are so unbelievably grateful that they exist.
When we found out that Oliver’s heart had stopped beating we were devastated. We were offered to deliver him in Maple Suite and every step of the way was so delicately handled.
The room offered us some sanctuary and comfort during the worst experience of our lives. The midwives care was second to none and Oliver was respected and cared for with such dignity throughout.
All money raised through our fundraising will go towards helping other families make memories with their babies who sadly haven’t survived.
We were able to make memories with Oliver and never felt rushed to leave, which we wouldn’t have had if the Maple Suite wasn’t there.
Thank you for all of the support Ben and I have received and we would be so grateful if you could now please help us give something back as a thank you in Oliver’s memory.”
