Come to Southmead on Doors Open Day
Come and explore our award-winning hospital on a guided tour during this year’s Bristol Doors Open Day, Saturday 10 September. Find out about the architectural design of our stunning Brunel building, see our helipad and our grass roofs - and you may even get to peak inside an operating theatre.
Our Brunel building, opened in 2014, is approximately 115,000 square metres in area and rises to seven floors at his highest point. The building is home to 24 operating theatres, 800 beds, and 38 lifts. On the tour you’ll also see our robots in action – 12 automated guided vehicles which help transport essential supplies, food and medication around the hospital.
Find out all the quirky facts about the building. For instance, did you know that it’s self-heating? And did you know that all of our milk (that’s 412,800 pints a year) comes from a herd of 350 Holstein Friesians grazing on 500 acres at a farm in Somerset?
Alternatively, on Doors Open Day why not join one of our Fresh Arts tours? Learn about our Fresh Arts Programme and the huge difference it makes to our patients and their families. For many people a hospital stay can be an anxious and lonely experience. The Fresh Arts programme delivers a range of creative arts and performance projects that provide patients and visitors with a welcome distraction, as well as comfort and a sense of well-being. On the tour you’ll see the art provided by the Programme around the building, our binary clock, and the results of the Fresh Arts interactive workshops.
The building tours will run every hour from 10am until 3pm. The Fresh Arts tours will run at 10am, 12pm and 2 pm. Tickets for all tours should be pre-booked via: www.bristoldoorsopenday.org.uk See you there!
