Half Marathon runners raise over £2,000
Fundraisers Richard Padley and his mother-in-law Donna Anthoney recently dropped in to hand over the whopping £2334 they have raised for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They pounded the streets in last autumn’s Bristol Half Marathon to raise the money to thank the NICU staff for treating Donna’s premature twins, Lucca and Luna.
“We would both like to say a massive thank you to everyone who sponsored us and helped raise the money towards this great cause.” Says Richard.
Donna, who lives in Droitwich, found out when she was 12 weeks pregnant that she was expecting twins. But following complications the twins were born here at Southmead Hospital by caesarean section at 25 weeks.
Richard takes up the story: “The twins were born on 28th March 2013 at 25 plus 2 weeks. Lucca weighed just 1lb 13oz (872 kg) and Luna weighed only 1lb 06oz (704kg). Donna and her husband Rob were unable to hold the twins until they were 3 weeks old. Luna was in intensive care for 5 weeks and Lucca for 4 weeks. Both had infections and both needed blood transfusions, and Luna was on and off a ventilator.
“The twins were in a critical condition but thanks to the staff at Southmead Hospital who dedicated their time and hard work both Lucca and Luna pulled through. They have now celebrated their 3rd birthday, but without the help of all the staff involved in their initial care they wouldn't be here today” says Richard.
When everyone was safely home, Richard and Donna decided to raise money for NICU by running a half marathon. “We really wanted to raise money for the NICU to thank all the staff for their hard work.” Adds Richard.
Both Donna and Richard spent the next few months training for the half marathon, running 3-4 times a week to increase their fitness.
“The day of the Half Marathon finally arrived and it was a fantastic atmosphere.” Explains Richard. “We couldn’t believe how many people had entered the event and after a long 2 hours, 5 minutes and 6 seconds we finally crossed the finishing line and were presented with a medal and T-shirt.”
Adds Adrian Brown, our Community Appeals Managery: “We would like to congratulate Richard and Donna on their massive superhero fundraising effort, and thank them for all the money they have raised. It will go towards treating sick and premature babies in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We’re so grateful for this support.”
