Southmead Hospital Charity has funded a new maternity mobile app that gives parents-to-be information, support and advice at their fingertips.

The app called 'My Pregnancy @NBT' has been developed by midwives and clinicians at North Bristol NHS Trust and contains more than 80 pages of information about pregnancy, labour and birth, post-natal support and breastfeeding.

The app is free to download and will replace the existing system of patient leaflets, which totals more than 80,000 a year given out to patients.

It enables parents-to-be to make informed decisions about their birthing options with virtual tours of Cossham Birth Centre, Mendip Birth Centre and the Delivery Suite at Southmead Hospital.

Dr Sonia Barnfield, North Bristol NHS Trust Consultant Obstetrician, said: “My Pregnancy @NBT is an excellent resource for expectant parents as it provides useful information from pregnancy through to labour and post-birth.

“The app allows the most up to date information to be accessible from one central place and has many useful elements such as the search and notes function.

“As well as empowering parents-to-be to make informed decisions, contact details for our teams are now in one place which makes it easier for them to be located.”

The app has already been well received by those who used it through the pilot phase.

Susan Hughes recently had a baby girl and was part of the trial group who had access to the My Pregnancy @ NBT app during the pilot stage.

She said: “To have all of the information I needed on my phone was fantastic as I was able to access the information while on holiday and when meeting friends for coffee.

“It made life so much easier, increasing my choices whilst keeping me informed and up to date of the latest information for mothers and babies.”

Elizabeth Bond, head of fundraising at Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to support the development of the My Pregnancy @NBT app as a fantastic resource of information and guidance for new parents.

“The app also supports a commitment towards more sustainable ways of delivering patient information by reducing the Trust’s consumption of paper.”

The app can be downloaded by searching My Pregnancy @NBT in the App Store or iTunes for Apple devices, or by searching in Google Play for Android devices. Hard copies of the information will still be available to those who request it.
