Staff teams taking part in our Run Row Ride event managed to travel to Brittany in France – while not leaving Southmead Hospital!
Six teams of staff from across the hospital took part in the challenge to run, cycle or row on static machines to raise money for their departments, and to raise awareness of the benefits of getting fit and active.
Each team of three people were given one hour to run on a treadmill, cycle on a static bike or row on a rowing machine and see how far they could get.
The event, on February 26, raised more than £2,000 for the charity and the teams in total covered more than 230 miles – enough to reach Brittany in France.
The winning team were the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal team made up of neuropathology consultant Areli Cuevas-Ocampo on the treadmill, Malcom Dixon, MDT co-ordinator on the bike and clinical governance co-ordinator Ruth Bardell on the rowing machine.
They covered a winning total of 40.91 miles.
The event was an opportunity for public and staff to find out more about our Events Calendar of fundraising opportunities for getting fit and active while raising money to support projects at the hospital.
Occupational Therapist Graham Madgwick gave free healthchecks to more than 50 people, measuring BMI and blood pressure as well as talking through general health advice.
And fitness instructors from Everyone Active at Horfield Leisure Centre were also on hand to talk about ways to get fit locally.
Ian Riddell, corporate and community officer, said: “Our first Run Row Ride was an unqualified success, thanks to everyone that made it happen.
“It was way more competitive than we predicted, everyone gave their all in the very hot atrium of the Brunel Building.
“There was lots of support from patients and visitors too who cheered on the teams and popped donations into the fundraising buckets.
“Thank you to occupational therapist Graham Madgwick who was a great source of advice and knowledge for people wanting a healthcheck.
“And a big thank you to Horfield Leisure Centre for providing some of the equipment and supporting our event.”
