The Tonic has recorded their version of the song ‘Lean on Me’ while in lockdown to raise money for Southmead Hospital Charity to support NHS staff at the forefront of fighting Coronavirus.

Each person in the 12-member acapella band – some of whom work for the NHS – recorded the song in their own homes for a video.

They have released the video on social media and have set up a fundraising page to raise money for the official charity for North Bristol NHS Trust.

Money raised by Southmead Hospital Charity’s Coronavirus Appeal will support staff at the Trust by providing care and welfare packages as well as funding access to specialist counselling and psychotherapy support.

The charity is also providing financial support to the bereaved families of staff who sadly lose their lives to Coronavirus.

The Tonic has previously performed live at Southmead Hospital Charity’s Buskathon fundraising events.

The song ‘Lean On Me’ by Bill Withers was arranged for The Tonic’s recording by Wendy Sergeant and the video was edited together by member Sarah Kelly.

Steve Mundey from The Tonic, said: “This cause is especially close to our hearts as we have members in the band who currently work or have worked for the NHS, including a midwife and a child and adolescent mental health professional.

“We recorded the video as an alternative to our usual rehearsals which obviously have not been able to go ahead due to lockdown.

“We’re really pleased that so many people have enjoyed it so far and have donated to our fundraising page – it’s a song that has an important message for us all right now so it is particularly poignant for people.”

Sarah Harrison, director of Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “A big thank you to The Tonic for showing their support for the staff at North Bristol NHS Trust in such a moving and thoughtful way.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by all the amazing and different ways that people are supporting the charity.

“As the official charity for North Bristol NHS Trust the hospital and members of staff tell us how much they appreciate this support at this difficult time.”
