Ben’s story: There are always people in need of a kind word

Published:

Ben volunteers to say thank you for the care his Grandad received.

My Grandad was treated in Southmead Hospital and the support he had from the staff was absolutely amazing.

While I was visiting him, I saw the Charity team running an event in the atrium. I asked if there were any opportunities to help out and that’s how I got involved in volunteering. I wanted to help raise money and to say thank you to the NHS for all they did for my Grandad.

Volunteering for The Great Bristol Buskathon

I volunteered at The Great Bristol Buskathon which is a really fun event. The most enjoyable part is seeing all the different performers who come to sing and dance to raise money for the hospitals. Everyone is so talented. I love watching them and so do the patients, families, and staff.

I also really love talking to people and they stop to chat as they walk through the atrium. It’s easy to spot us in our Charity t-shirts! A lot of people ask why we’re raising money and Ian from the Charity is always there to help me talk to people about all the good that the Charity’s supporters do for the hospitals. We have a good laugh together.

The hospital is the centre of our community

If you have some free time, volunteering is a great way to give back. The hospital is at the centre of our community and there are always patients, visitors, and staff that need a kind word or are grateful to see a smiling face. As soon as we’re allowed to volunteer at events again, I’ll be back.
