Christmas Appeal 2025: Bringing hope to people living with Parkinson’s

Published:

Parkinson’s slowly damages brain cells. This makes it harder to move, speak and do everyday tasks.

Professor Alan Whone and his team are conducting vital research into Parkinson’s, bringing hope to millions living with this debilitating disease. His dedication to understanding the complexities of Parkinson’s has already brought us closer to new treatments and therapies that could transform approaches to patient care.

Professor Alan is based at Southmead Hospital. His charity funded research explores how Glial Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF), a protein that supports and protects brain cells, could slow (or even reverse) Parkinson’s disease. Trials delivering GDNF directly to the brain is funded by generous donations, further research is planned with the hope of making huge advances in the treatment of Parkinson’s. The team are also developing innovative digital tools to better measure patient mobility outcomes.

This world-leading research, taking place here in Bristol, is a huge step forward. It has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life and the delivery of care for people living with Parkinson’s.

Thank you for your support – it makes a huge difference to our patients, their families and our staff.
