£44k and counting raised to fund Coronavirus research

Published:

We’re so grateful to our supporters, who have provided an amazing £44,499 towards vital Coronavirus research in Bristol.

The funding will enable our researchers to continue the next phase of their research to find new breakthroughs in treatments and understanding of the virus to ultimately save lives.

The additional funding comes on top of an initial £22,000 raised by our supporters.

However, we still more support to reach our target of £815,000. This money will fund the team’s life-changing research, and will look at long term effects of Coronavirus on patients who have recovered from the disease.

Better Coronavirus treatments in Bristol

Researchers are working alongside doctors and nurses on the frontline to give our NHS clinicians right here in Bristol better ways of treating people who have Coronavirus.

The projects have already recruited over a hundred patients who have recovered from Coronavirus to help.

These projects will also bring better understanding of the long-term impact of the virus and will support our NHS in preparing for a new medical landscape of the future. One such project is known as DISCOVER, led by Dr David Arnold, doctor at Southmead Hospital and NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow in University of Bristol’s Medical School.

“We are thrilled to have secured this latest round of funding to enable us to continue our Coronavirus research work.

“Thank you to  everyone who has supported this appeal – you have enabled us to make some real progress in our understanding of Coronavirus.

“I am confident that we can continue to make progress in understanding how we can support our clinical colleagues in the NHS to better treat patients and identify who is most at risk from this virus.”

Although these donations have made a huge impact already, there is still much more to do.

Led by the team at North Bristol NHS Trust, in partnership with local NHS Hospitals, Public Health England and the University of Bristol, these pioneering projects are contributing to a UK-led research programme for Coronavirus (COVID-19) which researchers hope will lead to new breakthroughs in fighting the virus.

Donations to the our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Research will help to fund three distinct strands of research – totalling £815,000.

The research will enable us to:

  • develop tests to diagnose and identify immunity to Coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • explore secondary lung and infection complications from the virus
  • test new drug treatments for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

“It is thanks to our donors and supporters that we have been able to give this latest round of funding; which is testament to the people of Bristol who have stepped up and supported us brilliantly throughout this pandemic.

“Our team of highly skilled and experienced researchers are experts in pioneering clinical and academic studies, putting us at the forefront of the fight against Coronavirus – right here in Bristol.

“But there is still a long way to go and is crucial that we continue this momentum so I’d appeal to the people and businesses of Bristol to get behind our researchers and support their work by donating to our appeal.”

Sarah Harrison, Director of Southmead Hospital Charity
