The Jolly Hog raises over £30,000 for Long-Covid research

From 2020 through to March 2021, a band of brothers – together with their team and aptly-named airstream Miss Piggy – spent 62 days handing out 50,000 free vegan and meat rolls to staff here at Southmead Hospital.

Max, Olly and Josh Kohn, the three brothers who founded independent, family-run The Jolly Hog, were also joined by 45 volunteers along the way, including broadcaster, former England rugby player and Strictly star Ugo Monye.  This simple act did so much.  Come rain or shine, blazingly hot or bitingly cold weather, the team showed up without fail – armed with an infectious energy that put a smile on every single member of staff they served.

Yet that was just the beginning of The Jolly Hog’s support for the patients, families and staff here at North Bristol NHS Trust. In the last 12 months, the team has gone on to raise a phenomenal £31,040.19, on top of their incredible free meals for staff.

From October 2020 to October 2021, The Jolly Hog donated 5p from every sale of their Jolly Good Scotch Egg. In those 12 months, they sold over 435,000 eggs – a whopping 52,170kg of scotch eggs – raising a cracking £21,768.

That fundraising was pushed over the £31,000 mark when founder Max, together with Financial Director Stu, took on the London Marathon on 3 October. 26.2 miles later, Max and Stu raised more than £9,000.

The symptoms of Long-Covid can be long-lasting, wide-ranging, and for some, life-changing. The research happening here at Southmead Hospital will play an important part in understanding these symptoms. And with the support of wonderful partners like The Jolly Hog, our researchers will be in an even better position to try and turn their pioneering discoveries into real treatments and in time, hopefully, help people across the world suffering from Long-Covid.

From supporting our staff to funding our Long-Covid research, we will be forever grateful for everything Max, Olly and Josh, and the whole Jolly Hog team have done for over the last 18 months. It’s because of wonderful people like them that we can be there for every patient, every step of the way.

The Jolly Hog team will always be firmly part of our NHS family here in Bristol.

Thank you for your support – it makes a huge difference to our patients, their families and our staff.
