Yesterday marked a special milestone at Southmead Hospital as staff and therapy teams gathered to celebrate the opening of a new stroke therapy space, made possible by donations to Southmead Hospital Charity.
The event included words of thanks from Sally Bennett, Director of Southmead Hospital Charity, and Peggoty, Clinical Lead Physiotherapist for Stroke, before the ribbon was cut., who both highlighted the importance of this project for patient care. Many members of the therapy team were present to see the transformation of what was once a disused bathroom into a bright, functional rehabilitation area.
Why this space matters
Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the UK, and early, high-quality rehabilitation is critical to recovery. Southmead Hospital is already a centre of excellence for stroke care, with one of the largest thrombectomy services in the country. This new therapy space ensures patients have greater opportunity to receive the intensive, evidence-based rehabilitation recommended in the latest national guidelines.
Previously, therapy often had to take place in cramped ward spaces or corridors, limiting what could be achieved. Now, patients will benefit from a dedicated environment designed for recovery, right next to the stroke ward. This means therapy can happen safely and privately, while keeping patients close to medical and nursing teams if their condition changes.
More patients, better care
The new space will allow more patients to receive therapy each day, helping the hospital meet national clinical audit standards and improve patient flow. It also enables therapy teams to provide appropriately prescribed, intensive interventions in line with the 2023 National Clinical Guideline for Stroke and NICE guidance.
“This new therapy space strengthens our ability to deliver high-class stroke rehabilitation,” said Martin Robinson, Lead Occupational Therapist (Stroke) at North Bristol NHS Trust. “It gives patients a dedicated environment for intensive therapy, right where they need it most, and enhances our ability to meet, and hopefully exceed, national standards for care”
A community effort
This project was made possible thanks to the generosity of donors to Southmead Hospital Charity. Their support ensures Southmead Hospital can continue to innovate and provide world-class care for those who need it most.
