How you can support Coronavirus research in Bristol

We are honoured to be launching our new £815,000 appeal to fund vital Coronavirus (COVID-19) research projects in Bristol.

In partnership with North Bristol NHS Trust, we are asking our supporters to help to fund three ground breaking research projects looking at potential new drug treatments, a deeper understanding of how the virus spreads and its long term impact on the health of people who recover from Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Our hard-working researchers here at Southmead Hospital will be working in partnership with local NHS Hospitals, Public Health England and the University of Bristol to contribute to a UK-led research programme for Coronavirus (COVID-19), which we hope will lead to new breakthroughs in fighting the virus.

“Our research is being carried out Bristol-wide, led by North Bristol NHS Trust and working in partnership with University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, and the University of Bristol. To our knowledge this is the largest single centre cohort study of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 in the UK.

“We hope to rapidly publish this work and share our results with other UK and international centres to allow wider use of successful prognostic biomarkers.

Our study could help doctors in the future decide which tests are useful in managing coronavirus and which are not.”

Dr David Arnold, Respiratory Registrar at Southmead Hospital and NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at Bristol Medical School

Donations to our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Research will help to fund three distinct strands of research – totalling £815,000.

The research will enable the team to:

  • develop tests to diagnose and identify immunity to Coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • explore secondary lung and infection complications from the virus
  • test new drug treatments for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

These projects will help us to understand better the long-term impact of the virus, and will support our NHS in preparing for a new medical landscape of the future.

“Our team of highly skilled and experienced researchers are experts in pioneering clinical and academic studies, putting us at the forefront of the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Southmead Hospital has a worldwide reputation in research excellence through our specialist Research & Innovation Centre.

“With the support of our donors we can carry out ground-breaking research which will help us to diagnose the virus, increase our understanding of how it spreads, and develop new potential treatments.”

Sarah Harrison, Director of Southmead Hospital Charity

“Our research is directly changing patient care now and by supporting these projects you will be helping us to transform patient services by enabling us to develop innovative breakthroughs sooner. Together we can make a real difference to the research of tomorrow.”

Dr Rebecca Smith, Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at North Bristol NHS Trust
